AAA to Run Real-World Emissions Tests

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) will be running on-road emissions testing to see if manufacturers’ emissions figures are not “misleading” claims.

The Australian government does not conduct tests on car manufacturers to ensure emissions compliance and regulation, AAA decided to conduct on-road emissions testing amid concerns raised by consumer rights and environmental groups. The on-road emissions tests will cost around $500,000.

AAA will be running test on 30 of the top-selling models in Australia. AAA’s emissions initial testing of the first 10 vehicles is to end by month’s end.  Results will be available later in the year. The AAA also plans to test a sample of affected VW diesel vehicles before and after the automaker makes repairs to affected cars.

AAA has engaged ABMARC to take on the task of analytics and comparison using ABMARC’s Real World Economy & Emissions (RWE) evidence-based methodology.

ABMARC has Australia’s only Portable Emissions Measurement System, or PEMS, which complies with US EPA (EPA 1065 2007) and European Commission (EC 595 2009 and Regulation 49) standards. – Wardsauto

The Australian Design Rules (ADRs) are national standards for vehicle safety, anti-theft and emissions. The ADRs are generally performance based and cover issues such as occupant protection, structures, lighting, noise, engine exhaust emissions, braking and a range of miscellaneous items.
