Jaguar Working on Rivals for Tesla Model S, Model X

Jaguar is reportedly planning to launch two electric cars by the end of 2019 that will be new additions to the current lineup.

The information was reported by Automobile, which also claimed the development of the electric cars came at the cost of performance-oriented models like a replacement for the XK and a supercar along the lines of the C-X75 concept unveiled in 2010.

The first of Jaguar’s electric cars is said to be the sedan, which will sit at the top of Jaguar’s range alongside a next-generation XJ. It’s said to feature a sleek design that will be almost coupe-like, allowing the next XJ to take on a more conventional three-box design. The electric sedan will rival the Tesla Model S as well as a similar electric sedan planned by Mercedes-Benz.

Likewise, the electric SUV is expected to be the pinnacle of Jaguar’s SUV range. It will take on Tesla’s Model X as well as Audi’s upcoming Q6 e-tron. A test mule for the electric SUV has already been spotted.

In addition to luring away Tesla buyers, the electric cars will enable Jaguar and its sister brand Land Rover to meet tougher emissions standards coming into force in the near future, particularly in China where the government is also heavily incentivizing electric cars to combat pollution.
