Mercedes Benz, BMW & Jaguar Aim Sales Growth in Indonesia

Premium car makers in Indonesia positive on growth with new models launch and growing upper-middle income class despite market remained flat this year-to-date with slight growth in Q2 driven by Low-Cost-Green-Cars;

The latest luxury models, such as those from Germany’s Mercedes-Benz and BMW, as well as English-made Jaguar, stole the spotlight during the ongoing Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) at the Indonesia Convention and Exhibition (ICE) in Serpong, Banten.

Mercedes-Benz showed off the latest model of its All-New E-Class, while BMW offered its global best-seller hybrid i8, which made its Indonesian debut at the expo.

Confidence was also high at the Jaguar booth,as the carmaker rolled out its first ever sports utility vehicle (SUV) in the F-Pace variant at the show.

Indonesia’s economy, which is greatly driven by domestic consumption, rose to 5.18 percent on an annual basis in the second quarter from a yearly rate of 4.91 in the first quarter, prompting optimism that recovery is underway.

The Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo) previously expressed hopes that car sales would increase in the second half of the year, even though the sales target has been set flat at 1.05 million vehicles.

Data showed that half of the target had been met by the end of June, with 531,929 cars sold.

Mercedes-Benz’s year-end sales target, but sales reached 1,628 vehicles in the first six months which claims to have a 49-percent share of the luxury car market in the country, also offered the E-250 Avantgarde at Rp 1.18 billion (US$89,680) and the E-300 Avantgarde for Rp 1.38 billion.

BMW, hopes that the hybrid model i8, the only one of its kind showcased at the GIIAS, will cater to demand from wealthy Indonesians. The price tag for the i8 has been set at Rp 3.5 billion.

Jaguar expects sales of its F-Pace model with two rows of seats will reach double digits. The car is equipped with a 3,000 cc engine and a glass roof. The company’s target of selling 200 cars by the end of the year. F-Pace price-tag between Rp 1.9 billion – Rp 2.19 billion, respectively. – The JakartaPost
